Approximately 400 NHS staff gathered together this week to celebrate ‘all that is great about the NHS’ and announce this year’s Chairman Award winners at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Glasgow.
It was a night to honour staff who show case the quality and commitment of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde’s workforce.
This is the fourth year running that the event also presented the William Cullen prizes for Innovation and for Teaching, in conjunction with the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh.
And for the first time this year’s the Special Judges Award of Excellence went to two winners instead of one.
The team at Central Decontamination Unit at Cowlairs were awarded the Special Judges Award of Excellence for their efforts in the immediate aftermath of a temporary closure of the unit. Without the efforts of the team, who went above and beyond, trauma and emergency surgery would not have been able to continue during this period.
The second team to receive the Special Judges Award of Excellence went to the haemato-oncology paediatric team who provide care and specialist treatment to some of the countries sickest children. Their kindness, patience, professionalism, empathy and dynamism during a difficult period has been remarkable. The team brings joy to their young patients each and every day.
NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Chairman, John Brown said: “This year has been a record breaking year for the Celebrating Success Staff Awards Event.
“There were a record 394 entries in the Chairman’s Awards, a testament to the high regard that the communities we serve have for NHSGGC staff.
“For the first time in the ten years of the Chairman’s Awards two teams were recognised with an award for excellence for their expertise and dedication in responding to unprecedented challenging situations.
“Along with the 394 entries to the Chairman’s Awards there was a record number of nominations for the local directorate and partnership awards with 441 nominations, more than double the figure for any previous year.
“This event was the chance to recognise our staff from across NHSGGC and celebrate their achievements in style.
“I hope everyone enjoyed the night as each and every one of the staff who received awards deserve to be congratulated for the care and services they provide every day to our local communities.”
This year, the Chairman’s Awards reflected the key aims of the organisation, renaming our categories to: Better Care, Better Health, Better Value and Better Workplace.
Our popular Nursing and Volunteer categories remain and for the second year we will be presenting the Global Citizenship award.

CHAIRMAN AWARDS
BETTER CARE
This award recognises staff who provide and contribute towards incredible patient care improving everyday practices across NHSGGC.
WINNER – Theatres Reception Team, RHC
The team are a vital link in the efficient and safe running of the theatre suites, regularly going above and beyond, the team are caring, enthusiastic and highly professional making a positive difference to patient experience.
BETTER HEALTH
This award commends staff who have implemented an initiative to improve the health and wellbeing of patients, the public and/or staff.
WINNER – Hilary Alba
As part of ensuring women seeking asylum get the treatment and care needed from NHSGGC, Hilary has implemented numerous initiatives working above and beyond to ensure the women move on from surviving to thriving.
BETTER VALUE
This award is for staff who have increased efficiencies taking a new approach to work making better use of resources.
JOINT WINNERS
Flash Teaching
Introduction of 15 minute daily ‘flash teaching’ by a specialist on their specialist subject, maintaining staff levels on the ward and promoting a culture of learning, empowering staff to constantly pass on knowledge and lift staff moral.
Medicines Reconciliation/Immediate Discharge Letter Team
Brenda McLean and David Campbell managed the roll out of this new system to over 350 wards. This was an enormous task requiring new processes and ways of working to get maximum value.
BETTER WORKPLACE
This award recognises the often unseen work of our staff who help make NHSGGC a better workplace, improving the culture and supporting colleagues.
WINNER – Benjamin Law
Ben developed a system which creates a personalised email for every member of staff to give them an overview of their statutory and mandatory training status. The system has already proven itself to be effective – in one pilot area the number of staff completing their fire safety training increased four-fold.
GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP
This award recognises staff who have travelled overseas to provide healthcare and/or education in developing countries or countries in crisis.
WINNER – Marc Clancy
Marc recently travelled to Jamaica as part of a team of charity workers from Transplant Links. The team performed the first renal transplant this century in Jamaica with the aim of setting up a self sustaining programme in Jamaica.
NURSING
This award recognises nurses(s) who demonstrate the best qualities of patient care and the ethos of nursing.
WINNER – Catherine MacRae
Catherine is an outstanding nurse who has consistently provided the highest standard of patient care during her 23-year career in the emergency department at RAH. She motivates and drive forward the whole team with great enthusiasm and is a great role model for all staff to aspire to.
VOLUNTEER
Recognising people who go the extra mile contributing tirelessly and providing outstanding help and support for the benefit of others.
WINNER – Gullalaii Yousafzai
Gullalaii is a valued member of the team, caring, non judgmental with a sunny nature that is evident in her engagement with the patients and staff. Her cheerful manner can bring a smile to patients at a time when they are particularly vulnerable.
SPECIAL JUDGES AWARD OF EXCELLENCE
The judges panel were so impressed by the standard of entries that this year, for the first time in the ten years that the Chairman’s Awards have been running, they have decided to award two special Awards of Excellence.
WINNER – Central Decontamination Unit
The loss of our ability to decontaminate sterile instruments last year was a catastrophic event. Managing the implications of this in the immediate aftermath was extremely challenging for all staff concerned. There is no doubt that the volume of trauma and emergency activity that was safely maintained during this period could not have been delivered without the efforts of this team.
WINNER – Haemato-Oncology Paediatric Team
The Haemato-Oncology team at the Royal Hospital for Children provide expert care and specialist treatment to some of the countries sickest babies, children and young people. To deliver such high quality care takes truly special qualities including kindness, patience, professionalism, empathy, technical knowledge, expertise, dynamism and resilience. This amazing team have those qualities in abundance and will always aim to bring some joy to their young patients each and every day.
