Following yesterday’s adverse weather conditions

Following yesterday’s adverse weather conditions, we are expecting our Accident & Emergency departments to be very busy today and over the weekend.

A&E is intended for life-threatening conditions and the most serious injuries. In such cases, people should call 999 or go to A&E immediately. However, unless you have a serious injury or your condition is life-threatening, A&E is not the best place to go.

We are asking people to ‘think ABC' before going to A&E, with quicker ways for you to access the care you need:

Ask yourself: Do I need to go out? For information on keeping yourself well and treating minor illnesses and injuries from home, go to NHS Inform or download the NHS24 app.

Be aware: There is help for many conditions right on your doorstep. Your local GP, pharmacy, dentist or optician offer a range of services.

Call 111: If it’s urgent, or you’re not sure, call NHS24 on 111. They’ll make sure you get the help you need.

If you do slip and have a minor injury, there are guides on how to care for these on our website. If you feel your injury needs to be seen to, please call NHS 24 on 111, who will provide you with advice and, if appropriate, an appointment for our virtual A&E or a Minor Injury Unit.

Meet Lead Advanced Nurse Practitioner, Andrew. He

Meet Lead Advanced Nurse Practitioner, Andrew. He works at the Flow Navigation Centre, also known as Virtual A&E.

The role of Virtual A&E is to assess and treat patients aged five years and older with non-life-threatening emergency injuries and illnesses in a virtual capacity. This means patients can be treated safely from the comfort of home, rather than visiting a potentially busy A&E in person.

If you have an injury or illness that you think needs treatment, call 111, and you may be given a virtual A&E appointment. After your virtual A&E appointment, if required, they can arrange a scheduled in-person appointment at A&E, a Minor Injuries Unit (MIU), or you may be referred to a specialist medical service for your needs.

Following the red weather warning, non-urgent outpatient appointments and routine hospital admissions scheduled for Friday 24th January are being cancelled.

We apologise for the inconvenience, but in view of the travel advice from Police Scotland, do not wish to risk patients travelling for non-urgent care.

Urgent and emergency care and essential maternity and community services will continue to be provided.

If you are affected, we will reschedule your appointment as soon as possible.

All vaccination clinics due to take place on Friday 24th January have been cancelled and appointments will be rescheduled.

We are contacting patients this afternoon and evening but would be grateful if you could share this information with any friends or family who may be affected.

To access the Out of Hours Dental Service, all you have to do is call NHS 24 on 111, select the dental option and you will receive help and advice. The service only provides help for urgent dental conditions, but people are urged to call 111 even if they’re not sure. 🦷

Even if you are not referred to the Out of Hours Service, you will receive advice on self-care and help available locally.

Congratulations to @rhcglasgow Specialist Orthoptist, Claire McFadden on becoming the first person in Scotland to complete a Masters in Ophthalmology, Advanced Clinical Practice (Paediatrics).

Claire's advanced training has empowered her to take on greater responsibilities, including the implementation of a virtual clinic. The ophthalmology service is now treating around 250 children with virtual and face-to-face outpatient appointments per week. Go Claire!! 🥳

Congratulations to Maggie Clark, an Emergency Laparotomy Nurse Specialist at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley, who was named in the 2025 New Year Honours List! Maggie, who supports patients undergoing emergency abdominal surgery, was awarded the British Empire Medal for her service to the NHS.

Meet Community Pharmacist, Azhar. Pharmacies have truly become the heart of healthcare in the community setting and are no longer just a place to collect your prescriptions.

A community pharmacist:

🔵 Offers advice for a range of minor illnesses
🔵 Counsels patients on how to take their medicines safely
🔵 Recommends the most effective treatments

They can now also treat conditions such as impetigo, shingles or urinary tract infections, so if you feel like you might have one of these, your pharmacist should be your first stop.

Community pharmacists are also good to help advise with colds and flu. Many viruses are not treatable with antibiotics, but community pharmacists can help with various over-the-counter medicines to help you feel comfortable and alleviate the symptoms you may be experiencing.

Optometrist, Willis Wilkie explains that you don’t have to be a glasses wearer to visit an optometrist for help. Anyone in Greater Glasgow and Clyde can visit an optometrist if they have an issue with their eyes.

We are continuing to highlight our NHS Heroes. Meet Kerri Neylon, a GP in Glasgow's Southside and one of the many GPs caring for people in GGC during the busy winter months. Here, Kerri advises when is best to visit a GP and the other options available to you.

Contact your GP if you have an urgent care need, an illness that does not improve with self-treatment, are worried about your health, or have an ongoing health condition.

If you feel like you need to contact your GP, please ensure that you’ve checked self-help guides online and / or spoken with your local pharmacist for advice on common ailments, their treatments and medication first.

This is particularly important with winter viruses at this time of year. Most cough, cold and flu symptoms result from common winter viruses. Viral infections do not respond to antibiotics, so rather than calling your GP, the best advice is to stay at home and take traditional over-the-counter remedies.

On average, NHSGGC patients who visit Minor Injuri

On average, NHSGGC patients who visit Minor Injuries Units are seen, treated, and discharged in two to three hours or less.

If you have a minor injury that you think needs treatment, call 111 and an advisor will either make an MIU appointment for you or will signpost you to another form of care, including our virtual A&E.

Minor Injury Units are the best care option for anyone who needs treatment for conditions such as cuts needing stitches, broken bones below the knee and elbow, sprains, and minor burns, as they have specialised staff, facilities, and processes dedicated to caring for these issues.
