Meet Dr Helen McDevitt, Principal Investigator for paediatric bone and neonatal studies at NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.![]()

Helen was motivated to work in research because she believes it is one of the best ways to improve care for patients. By combining research with her clinical roles in neonatology and paediatric bone disease, she helps ensure that new evidence can make a real difference to children and families. What Helen enjoys most about research is the challenge of trying something new and finding innovative ways to solve problems. ![]()

One of Helen's proudest research achievements has been her involvement with the mOm incubator project since it began. The novel, inflatable, low-cost incubator was successfully trialled in Glasgow before achieving CE marking and being urgently deployed to Ukraine. ![]()

Helen worked with clinicians there to support the use of the incubator in extremely challenging circumstances, including providing care in basement rooms during blackouts.![]()

Reflecting on the experience, she said: “It was a unique experience to connect with clinicians in Ukraine and support their use of the incubator in such difficult surroundings. I was pleased to be able to contribute in a small way to helping doctors care for babies in a war-torn country. Seeing a piece of research developed in Glasgow go on to support newborn care where it was needed most was incredibly rewarding.”
