Exhibition by local school pupils goes on display at the RAH

Artwork created by Renfrewshire school children has gone on display to staff and visitors at the Royal Alexandra Hospital.

The Castlehead High School Exhibition features screen printed posters and abstract collages using historical imagery from the local area contrasted with words and phrases of action.

The pupils, whose school neighbours the RAH, also created drawings which explored their fine art skills and techniques.

Their artwork was made in partnership with Glasgow School of Art (GSA) and Jupiter Artland’s Jupiter + programme.

They were given free access to an art studio run by Jupiter + for six months, as well as high quality materials and specialist screen printing resources.

Pupils recently attended the RAH to see their work on display at a special launch event in the public dining room, which staff pass through on their way to the hospital’s rest and relaxation hub.

Jamie Alexander, 16, who is in fifth year, said: “It’s inspiring to see our work on display where members of the public and NHS workers can see it.

“I enjoy doing art at school and this was a great project to be part of.”

Jamie’s classmate Craig Parker, also 16, said: “I really enjoyed making all the artwork and I’m happy to see it all up on display.”

Through Castlehead’s role as a School of Creativity, which is the result of a collaboration between GSA and Renfrewshire Council, pupils were given the opportunity to work with arts facilitators and higher education practitioners.

The RAH exhibition is part of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde’s Anchor Organisation work, which allows the community to use the health board’s land and assets, including giving access to local schools, students and cultural organisations to show their work in public spaces.

Ben Martin, Castlehead art teacher, said: “It’s fantastic to see our pupils’ work on display at the RAH, where it can be enjoyed by staff and visitors to the hospital.

“I know that seeing their work in an exhibition is a very rewarding experience for the young people who took part.

“The learning partnership with Glasgow School of Art is designed to raise pupil aspiration and gives the pupils an opportunity to work with artists and to make connections in their local community.

“Creating these works can also help pupils who may be considering going on to apply to study art when they leave school, as they can use it in a portfolio.”

Jackie Sands, Senior Arts and Health Improvement Lead for NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde, said: “We are so pleased to be able to celebrate the work of pupils from a neighbouring school by putting it on display in a public area of the RAH.

“Bringing this artwork and young artists into the healthcare environment not only brightens up the RAH dining room, but it also helps us to create feelings of connection and welcome the strengthening of our ties with arts and culture and  our local community.

“NHSGGC is committed to our role as an anchor organisation, which acts on behalf of the local communities and the local areas that we serve to provide opportunities  going beyond healthcare provision.”

The exhibition will be on display until the end of July.
