A fun day for deaf children and their families has been organised this Saturday (19th) at the new Royal Hospital for Children.
The Audiology Department together with National Deaf Children’s Society (Scotland) and West Scotland Deaf Children’s Society has organised a family event with a range of ‘deaf friendly’ activities.
On the day children will have access to a range of activities including face painting, story telling, balloon modelling, hearing aid decoration, hearing dogs for deaf children and information on deaf friendly.
The event will also allow families with hearing impairments to meet other families in a similar situation.
Jim Harrigan, Head of Audiology at the new hospital has been involved in organising the event. He said: “This year is the 10th anniversary of newborn hearing screening and we wanted to mark the occasion somehow and to let other families see how deaf children with the correct support can develop.
“This then progressed into offering a fun filled day for families of children with a hearing impairment. With the help of a number of organisations who offer support to families we have arranged an event that will provide fun for the children but also allow families to discover all the various organisations who can offer them help in a range of different ways.
“We also hope that families will get into discussions with other families who have children with a hearing impairment or whose children are deaf. Being able to talk to someone in a similar situation really can make a difference.
“We will also be offering families a mini tour of the new hospital and the National Deaf Children’s Society will have their technology roadshow vehicle onsite which is brand new facility and it’s first visit to Scotland.”
