A major new health and social care hub in the East End of Glasgow is just weeks away from opening after building work was completed.
The Parkhead Hub, in Duke Street, is going through the final stages of fitting out and commissioning, and it is hoped that the site will start accepting patients in late January.
The project – a collaboration involving NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC), Glasgow City Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP) and other partners – brings together a number of community health and social care services, which are currently located at nine different sites.
When open, the Hub will provide services for children, adults and older people, addictions, justice, homelessness, sexual health and health improvement, with GP services, community pharmacy and dental services.
The facility will also provide community spaces including bookable rooms, a café and the relocated Parkhead library, which is operated by Glasgow Life.
The Hub, which was designed by Hoskins Architects, has been built on the site of the former Parkhead Hospital and current Sandyford, Anvil Centre and Parkhead Health Centre at Salamanca Street. Hub West Scotland was appointed by NHSGGC as its development partner to deliver the project and BAM Construction are the lead contractor.
Professor Tom Steele, Director of Estates & Facilities at NHSGGC, said: “NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is committed to an ongoing programme of maintenance and replacement, to help ensure that all our facilities provide space for high-quality, modern healthcare.
“The Parkhead Hub is the latest in a number of major health and social care developments throughout the NHSGGC area, and I would like to thank Hub West Scotland, BAM Construction and all our partners for their commitment and collaboration in this project.”
Iain Marley, Chief Executive of Hub West Scotland, said: “We are thrilled to have achieved Practical Completion of the Parkhead Hub, a true landmark project. This state-of-the-art facility represents a transformational investment in the Parkhead district, combining essential health and social care services with community-focused amenities such as a library and training facilities.
“As Scotland’s largest net-zero carbon health and social care centre, it sets a new benchmark for sustainability and community regeneration. Achieving this milestone is a testament to the dedication and collaboration of our entire project team, whose efforts have also generated over £19.5m in social value through local employment, apprenticeships, and supply chain engagement.
“We are proud to have played a role in delivering this pioneering hub that will serve the community for generations to come.”
Councillor Chris Cunningham, Glasgow City Council’s Convener for Health, Care and Caring, and Older People, said: “The Parkhead Hub will be, without doubt, a fantastic community asset for the north-east of the city.
“Our ambition is to ensure that everyone in Glasgow can lead healthier lives and the new hub, and all the services it will provide, will help us achieve that.
“This is a great example of co-locating services and partnership working. It’s a one-stop shop for residents to access services from a range of organisations including the city council, Glasgow Life and the Glasgow Health and Social Care Partnership.”
Alana Ward, Head of Libraries and Communities at Glasgow Life, said: “The opening of this hub is an exciting new chapter for Parkhead Library and the local area. This modern and more accessible library will continue to be a friendly space for the whole community.
“Parkhead Library users will have uninterrupted access to our services as the new library will open as soon as the old one shuts. We look forward to welcoming people to the library in early 2025.”
