NHSGGC gets on its bike this Cycle To Work Day

NHSGGC runs active travel initiatives for patients and staff across its many sites.

Thursday August 1st is Cycle To Work Day, and NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is encouraging staff to swap four wheels for two in its ongoing drive to promote sustainability and lower emissions.

As well as its ongoing drive towards net zero, NHSGGC is committed to promoting active and sustainable travel among its staff, and it has put in place a number of initiatives to support that.

Events such as Dr Bike take place regularly across our main hospital sites, providing staff with access to a bike expert where they can get repairs done and learn more about bike maintenance.

Through Cyclescheme, staff have the opportunity to buy bikes and cycling equipment through their salary. By doing this, savings of between 25% and 39% can be made, and the cost can be spread over 6, 12, 18 or 24 months.

The health board is also committed to installing secure bike storage across all of its main hospital sites for staff, patients and visitors to use, which cuts down on the use of cars, for those who are able to use pedal power.

Denis Sweeney, Travel Planning and Systems Manager at NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, said: “Many local journeys could be far more pleasant and convenient if we do not take a car, and cycling for short trips can be just as quick as driving.

“Cycling is not only good for your health, it saves you time and money and is much better for the environment so, this National Cycle to Work day, why not explore the opportunities to make cycling part of your commute?”

Martin Johnston, Head of Sustainability at NHSGGC, said: “We want to promote and support cycling for everyone, so we’d encourage all staff – and any other members of the public who are able – to try leaving their cars at home, even if it’s just for one day.

“NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is working hard to promote cycling as part of its commitment to active and sustainable travel, so we’d encourage everyone to give it a go.”
