  • 2 min read

A nurse has been named in the New Year Honours List for her dedication and service to the NHS.

Maggie Clark, an Emergency Laparotomy Nurse Specialist with NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC), was awarded the British Empire Medal.

The mum-of-two works at Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley, supporting patients who are undergoing emergency abdominal surgery.

She told of her shock at the unexpected honour, and praised the team she works with for their hard work.

Maggie said: “I am still in shock but very honoured to have received this award.

“I work with a wonderful team here in Paisley and I’m privileged to have cared for many patients and their families over the years.

“For me this British Empire Medal is recognition to the dedication and hard work carried out by the whole of the surgical team and the wider multidisciplinary team of whom I am fortunate to be a small part of.

“I’m very lucky to be someone who enjoys their work and meeting and learning from patients and their families and is undoubtedly one of the best parts of my job.”

She said the RAH team uses a holistic approach to provide patients and their families with a safe and consistent quality of care following emergency surgery.

Maggie was previously a finalist in the Nurse of the Year category at the Scottish Health Awards in 2023.

The honours system recognises people who have made achievements in public life and or committed themselves to serving and helping the UK.

Dr Brian Patrick Murphy, a former Consultant Cardiologist with NHSGGC, was also awarded an MBE for services to heart failure therapies and to people with Motor Neurone Disease.

Melanie McColgan, Director of NHSGGC’s Clyde sector, which includes the RAH, said: “I am delighted that the dedication Maggie has shown to the NHS has been recognised by these Honours.

“I’d like to thank Maggie for the wonderful support she gives to patients, families and other staff members at the RAH.”
