Nominate your unsung NHSGGC hero for a Healthcare Science Award

  • 3 min read

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is asking members of the public to help celebrate a group of staff that can often be the unsung heroes of the NHS.

Healthcare Scientists perform a huge range of roles supporting clinical staff and often work directly with patients – and, if one of these staff have been critical to your care or the care of others, now is your chance to nominate them for a national award.

It may be the medical physicist who was critical to your loved one’s cancer care or a cardiac physiologist who supported you during tests to investigate heart function. Maybe it was a biomedical scientist who analysed your sample to make sure your diagnosis was correct, or a clinical scientist in genetics who provided treatment options for a genetic alteration.

Healthcare Scientists are critical to NHSGGC’s ability to provide the best possible, person-centred care, so we are inviting staff, patients and relatives to nominate an individual or team for the Chief Scientific Officer’s Award, for Healthcare Science.

The awards, which are being held on 13th March, as part of Healthcare Science Week 2025, celebrate the skills and expertise of Healthcare Scientists across Scotland.

They recognise innovation and transformation within our services, leadership within our workforce, and high quality education and service delivery. They also provide a platform to share best practice throughout the profession.

Nominations close on Friday 21 February, and the awards themselves are split into seven categories:

·       Healthcare Scientist of the Year

·       Rising Star

·       Healthcare Science Support Worker of the Year

·       Excellence in Workforce Collaboration

·       Quality in Action

·       Education in Practice

·       Excellence in Clinical Leadership

Karen Brazier, Healthcare Science Professional Lead for NHSGGC, said: “Providing high-quality care for our patients is a real team effort, and our Healthcare Scientists are absolutely key to so many aspects of what we do.

“While the roles they perform are many and varied, their commitment to their jobs, and to the part they play in looking after the people of Scotland, is a constant among all of them.

“I would like to thank them all for the professionalism, care and commitment they display every day – but I would also like to encourage everyone to take this chance to celebrate the work of our Healthcare Scientists and submit a nomination for these awards.”

Nominations are open until 17:00 on Friday 21 February 2025, and winners will be announced at an online event on Thursday 13th March.

What is Healthcare Science Week?

Healthcare Science Week, which takes place this year on 10-16 March, is an annual week-long programme designed to promote and celebrate the amazing work of Healthcare Science professionals.

The aim is to raise awareness of the wide range of careers and roles within Healthcare Science, highlighting the difference they all make to patients’ lives.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is using the week to tell the public and other health professionals about the roles of its own Healthcare Scientists, and how science and technology is vital in modern patient care. It is also an invaluable opportunity for existing Healthcare Science staff to inspire the next generation by promoting the new career structures in local schools and colleges.
