To mark International Day of the Nurse 2023, NHSGGC is celebrating the fantastic contribution nurses make to the health service by spotlighting some staff working across departments and united under the delivery of high-quality person centred care.
Name: Gillian Hamilton
I work as a Deputy Charge Nurse in Ward 30 at Glasgow Royal Infirmary which is medicine for the elderly and have been qualified for 6 years but been a Deputy Charge Nurse for 2 and half years.
The best part about my job is being able to listen to my patient’s life stories. There are so many people that come from all different backgrounds and walks of life and I really enjoy listening to all their words of wisdom. Most people enjoy telling their stories about their life, their Family, hobbies, pets’, life experiences and when they are smiling it really makes my day a little brighter.
I like to make sure the ward is a place my patients can feel comfortable and happy. In the ward, we like to sing and most of the patients do as well. We may not always be very good and won’t be winning the next x-factor but if my patients happy by singing Frank Sinatra then I will happily sing along.
As well as making our patients happy, I have a real passion for teaching students. I find great job satisfaction when I teach someone something new, perhaps they are new to the job, a student or someone who has been doing the job a long time. I find everyone has something to learn from someone, every day.
In terms of a career highlight would be getting my Deputy role, it has something I feel I have worked long and hard for and enjoying the new challenge it has given me.
If you are someone who is driven and enjoy meeting people and listening to people, then please come and join NHSGGC
Working for NHSGGC has given me so many opportunities and I have taken on every one of them. The health board has a lot to offer and if you are willing to accept challenges and perform to the best of your ability, then take on the new challenge.
