Staff at the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow helped to create a Hollywood premiere Buzz on Tuesday (June 14), for a special screening of Disney and Pixar’s new Lightyear movie, at the hospital’s MediCinema.

Children and their families got to enjoy the latest adventure of Toy Story hero Buzz Lightyear ahead of his new film hitting screens around the country on Friday (June 17).

Supported by the Glasgow Hospital Children’s Charity, MediCinema and Disney, RHC staff were able to give patients and their families the full red carpet treatment, with special goodie bags to celebrate the cinema opening fully for patients again for the first time since March 2020.

Getting the star treatment was eight-year old Jack Murnaghan, along with his mum Kirsty O’Shea. Jack was an inpatient at the RHC for two weeks, with the premiere of Lightyear marking his last night in hospital.

After a difficult couple of weeks Kirsty, 32, from Glasgow, said the look on his face was priceless as he turned up for the premiere.

She said: “He loved every minute of it and I think all of the other children did too. To see the difference in all of their faces was great, everyone was smiling and happy. He was so delighted to get to see the film before everyone else and he loved the goodie bag too.”

Following the film, Jack was given the news that he could go home. While his time in hospital was worrying and stressful for Jack, his mum and his brothers Liam and Ethan, both 10, Kirsty was delighted to see all of his troubles disappear during the evening.

She said: “Now when Jack is talking about his time in hospital he is saying ‘I got to see the new Lightyear film before everyone’ and is telling our family all about that, instead of test and scans. The staff at the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow have been amazing, they all took the time to get to know Jack and to go to this effort for the children, I can’t thank them enough.”

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde’s Director for Women and Children Services, Jamie Redfern said: “We are thrilled to see the MediCinema fully opened again for our young patients and their families. Everyone had a brilliant evening and I would like to thank all of our staff, the Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity and MediCinema for making this possible.

“Our dedicated staff at the Royal Hospital for Children work tirelessly to provide the highest standard of care and continue to go to infinity and beyond to bring joy to our patients and their families.”
